What is coronary Atherosclerosis?
Atherosclerosis (ASVD) is a very serious health complication where plaque forms on the walls of your arteries. It’s known to cause cardiovascular disease which, for the past 15 years, has been the leading cause of death in developed countries such as the USA, Canada, and many others. ASVD leads to heart disease, typically later in life, and is a heartbreaking disease to contend with for everyone involved.
ASVD occurs when there is a build-up of cholesterol, calcium, fat deposits, and coagulated red blood cells on the walls of the main arteries. This build-up solidifies over time and can restrict the flow of blood, even causing entire blockages that result in heart attacks, strokes, and ultimately death. This is because the arterial walls lose their flexibility and develop cracks. Inflammation increases as immune cells start to build up in the damaged areas and the disease begins to take over.
What Causes ASVD?
Typically, ASVD is caused by one of six major conditions that can be serious enough on their own: high blood sugar, obesity, chronic inflammation, high blood lipid levels, high blood pressure, and oxidative damage. It’s common for one of these conditions to worsen with the advancement of another, leading to increased complications and earlier signs of ASVD. If no changes are made to combat the disease, it will eventually lead to premature heart failure.
