Short answer: No—THC is not considered safe for cats. Felines are especially sensitive to THC, and toxicity can present with drooling, wobbliness (ataxia), profound sedation, vomiting, agitation, or even seizures. For senior or chronically ill cats, the safer cannabinoid path—when appropriate and vet-approved—is CBD-only, in very low doses, from COA-verified pet formulations.
Why THC is risky for cats
- Neurologic sensitivity: Even small THC exposures can cause ataxia, tremors, hypersalivation, and disorientation.
- Variable products: Inaccurate labels or edible “human” products increase overdose risk.
- Comorbidities: Kidney/liver disease and polypharmacy raise the stakes; THC adds sedation and may complicate care.
When CBD-only may be considered (vet-supervised)
CBD (non-intoxicating) may support comfort, mobility, and calmer sleep in some cats with arthritis, anxiety, or chronic illness—but it must be approached cautiously and never as a replacement for prescribed care.
- Start ultra-low: e.g., 0.25–0.5 mg CBD once daily for a 8–10 lb cat; hold 4–7 days before any change.
- Monitor: Appetite, activity, litter habits, demeanor, and any ataxia or excessive sedation.
- Review meds: Cannabinoids can affect CYP450 metabolism; vets should screen for interactions (e.g., NSAIDs, anticonvulsants, sedatives).
COA-verified pet products
- Restore Pet – CBD Tincture (CBD-only; coconut-oil carrier; gentle on feline GI)
- K-9 Canna Cookies (CBD) — dog-specific; do not use for cats (xylitol/flavor cautions). Felines should use feline-safe tinctures only.
Verify each batch: match your lot ID to its Certificate of Analysis (potency + metals/solvents/microbes). If you can’t verify a product, don’t use it.
Red flags that require urgent veterinary care
- Sudden ataxia, tremors, seizures, or extreme lethargy
- Persistent vomiting, hypersalivation, or dilated pupils
- Any exposure to human edibles, concentrates, or unknown oil
