What Is Homeostasis in the Human Body?

Homeostasis refers to the way that your body maintains balance and stability when stress is applied externally. A good example would be your temperature – your body naturally regulates to ensure that you never get too cold or too hot, and you’ll either shiver or sweat when one or the other occurs. When you undergo external stress, it can disrupt your body’s stable state and take you out of homeostasis, leading to inflammation and other issues. It’s the goal of our bodies to keep us balanced and in a state of homeostasis, but sometimes that can prove to be difficult. That’s why many choose to use CBD to assist in getting back to that happy, healthy state.

How CBD Supports the Endocannabinoid System

According to scientists, CBD may help to slow the breakdown of existing endocannabinoids. Your body produces endocannabinoids naturally, but when you can’t keep up with external stress, CBD acts as a supplementary injection of endocannabinoids that your body can then use to help bring you back into a balanced state of being. CBD’s power comes from its interaction with the CB1 and CB2 receptors inside of our brains, which, when either activated, inhibited, or antagonized, can help to reduce stress, pain, and inflammation. Essentially, CBD wellness products can help to improve your body’s efficiency in reducing inflammation that would otherwise prevent normal cell function.

How Does Homeostasis Work?

Homeostasis involves a fluctuating process where our bodies constantly make adjustments to numerous bodily functions and systems in an effort to achieve the right balance. When it is achieved successfully, everything works in harmony to combat external stresses. When it isn’t, our bodies send and receive signals to try and establish order.

To further answer what is Homeostasis in the human body, There are three components that make up homeostatic control mechanisms, and they work continuously in an attempt to maintain homeostasis:

  • Receptor neurons send information to the brain when stimulated by external forces
  • The brain sends signals to an effector in the body as a result of the information received by the neurons in an attempt to handle the external stimulation
  • The effector responds to the brain by signaling for a response until the brain tells it that the issue has been resolved

Our endocannabinoid systems (ECS) constantly send signals to cells throughout our bodies in order to maintain homeostasis, and they are responsible for several physiological functions. Comprised of cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids, and enzymes, our ECS can manage inflammation, digestion, pain, sleep, immune response, and other functions that are essential to our survival. When an infusion of CBD is applied to the ECS, our bodies use the cannabinoid to activate both the CB1 and CB2 receptors, which can be found throughout our bodies within our nervous system. So, when homeostasis cannot be achieved naturally by our ECS, CBD can provide the needed boost to help our bodies regulate and achieve it another way.

CBD can also positively impact our dopamine receptors, opioid receptors, and serotonin receptors, which regulate things like our mood, pain, anxiety, and even addiction.
