Old Diseases, New Neighborhood: Why Your Environment Matters More Than Ever
Wisdom From the Front Porch
I’ve been thinking about something.
If my grandfather woke up tomorrow morning…
I don’t think he’d recognize the neighborhood.
Not because the houses changed.
Because everything else did.
He’d walk outside and wonder why nobody was outside.
He’d notice people walking their dogs while staring at their phones.
He’d ask why kids weren’t riding bikes.
He’d probably wonder why everybody looked so busy…and so tired.
Then I’d hand him my phone.
Poor guy.
By breakfast he’d know about six wars…
three celebrity divorces…
two political scandals…
a stock market prediction…
and seventeen videos explaining why blueberries are either a miracle food or government propaganda.
Welcome to the future, Grandpa.
Sorry about that.
😂
The funny thing is…
when people say,
“Well…people have always gotten diabetes…heart disease…cancer…depression…”
they’re right.
The names haven’t changed.
The neighborhood has.
That’s a big difference.
A tomato plant growing in rich soil isn’t the same as a tomato plant trying to grow in concrete.
Same seed.
Different environment.
Different outcome.
Humans aren’t much different.
✅ Grandpa’s Neighborhood
☀️ Morning sunlight.
🌙 Real darkness.
🚶 Movement built into life.
🥕 Seasonal food.
🤝 Neighbors who actually knew each other.
🌳 Time spent outside.
📺 One television.
📱 Zero smartphones.
❌ Our Neighborhood
📱 Screens before sunrise.
💡 Bright light after sunset.
🚗 Sitting most of the day.
🍟 Food available every hour.
📶 Signals everywhere.
😵 Constant stress.
📰 More opinions before breakfast than Grandpa heard in a month.
Kind of makes you wonder…
Does biology notice the neighborhood?
Here’s where this gets interesting.
Your body isn’t keeping score by disease names.
It’s paying attention to the environment.
Every morning your eyes ask,
“Where’s the sun?”
Every evening your brain asks,
“Why is it still noon in here?”
Your cells ask,
“When are we moving?”
Your nervous system asks,
“Is this constant stress…or is a lion actually chasing us?”
And your mitochondria?
They’re quietly trying to produce energy in an environment they were never designed to navigate.
The names on the medical chart may not have changed.
But almost every signal reaching your biology has.
That’s not opinion.
That’s environmental physiology.
Biology Doesn’t Negotiate
Your genes aren’t confused.
Your body isn’t outdated.
It’s simply responding to the environment you place it in.
Light.
Darkness.
Food.
Movement.
Connection.
Stress.
Those signals are conversations.
And your biology answers every single one.
Whether you’re paying attention…
or not.
Things Nature Never Needed
❌ Wi-Fi.
❌ Bluetooth.
❌ Blue light after midnight.
❌ An app reminding birds when sunrise happens.
Yet somehow…
spring still arrives right on schedule.
Funny how nature never misses the meeting.
Cody’s Take
Maybe we’ve spent too much time asking,
“What’s wrong with people?”
And not enough time asking,
“What’s happened to the environment people are trying to live in?”
Those are two very different questions.
One blames.
The other explains.
I know which one I’d rather spend my coffee thinking about.
This Week’s Challenge
Don’t try to change your whole life.
Change one signal.
☀️ Watch one sunrise.
🥗 Eat one meal outside.
🚶 Take one walk without your phone.
💡 Turn one light off early.
Because biology doesn’t need perfection.
It notices direction.
The Line
The diseases may have the same names…
But the neighborhood they live in has completely changed.
Before You Close This Tab…
☀️ Did I give my biology a sunrise today?
🚶 Did I move because I was designed to?
🌳 Did I spend time in the environment that built human biology?
📱 Did I let modern convenience become modern captivity?
😂 Did I laugh at how weird we’ve made simple things?
Because maybe…
the answer isn’t found in inventing a new human.
Maybe it’s found in remembering the one we already are.
